In a tragic incident, five senior members of Iran’s security forces were killed in what is suspected to be an air strike on the Syrian capital. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard of Iran swiftly pointed fingers at Israel, accusing the nation of orchestrating the attack that not only claimed the lives of Iranian military advisers but also resulted in casualties among Syrian forces.
Israel, however, has chosen to remain silent on the matter. The country has a history of conducting strikes on Iranian-linked targets in Syria over the years. The frequency of such strikes has notably surged since the initiation of the Israel-Gaza war, triggered by Hamas’s attacks on Israel in early October.
Iran’s foreign ministry promptly condemned the incident, labeling it as an “aggressive and provocative” act by Israel. The ministry called upon the international community to denounce these attacks. The deceased individuals were identified as senior figures within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, a significant military, political, and economic force in Iran. These figures had been stationed in Syria since the onset of the civil war in 2011, actively supporting President Bashar al-Assad’s regime against widespread rebellion.
The attack unfolded in the Mazzeh neighborhood, located in southwest Damascus, a region that houses a military airport, the UN headquarters, embassies, and restaurants. Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported that the strike claimed the lives of the IRGC’s Syria intelligence chief, his deputy, and other Guard members. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based campaign group, corroborated the toll, indicating that 10 people, including leaders of the Revolutionary Guard, lost their lives.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency confirmed that some of the missiles were intercepted, but the strikes, primarily hitting a residential building, resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Witnesses in the area reported witnessing explosions and a large cloud of smoke, with the aftermath marked by the sound of ambulances.
This recent incident follows a suspected Israeli air strike just outside Damascus last month, which claimed the life of a senior IRGC commander. The broader Middle East has been on high alert since October 7, when Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, resulting in civilian casualties and hostages taken back to Gaza.
